Meist ist es aus Metall gearbeitet und oftmals vergoldet. In diesem Kästchen werden die konsekrierten eucharistischen Gaben (also Brot und Wein, die nach katholischem Glauben Leib Christi sind) aufbewahrt, insbesondere, um den Teilnehmern am Abendmahl, den Kranken und den Sterbenden jederzeit gereicht werden zu können. Oftmals findet sich, spätestens nach dem Tabernakeldekret vom 1. Juni 1957, auf oder direkt neben dem Tabernakel auch ein „ewiges Licht“, das an die reale Existenz Christi in der Eucharistie erinnert. Die vom Zweiten Vatikanischen Konzil 1963 beschlossene Liturgiereform hat an vielen Orten zu Altarumbauten geführt und auch zur Aufstellung von neuen Tabernakeln geführt: Das Konzil wünschte in seiner Konstitution über die heilige Liturgie (Sacrosanctum Concilium), dass die Tabernakelgesetzgebung geändert werden solle. Daher befindet sich in seit dieser Zeit gebauten oder umgebauten Kirchen der Tabernakel meist in einer eigenen Seitenkapelle oder im Altarraum auf einer Stele.
